Lilla Hagymásy-Rosenberg is a Hungarian-American multimedia artist with a focus in textiles.
Handcraft, and meticulous process, is at the core of my practice.
My connection to craft stems from my childhood, when the richly embroidered folk costuming I saw in my cultural community led me to bring needle to cloth. An interest in textiles, their origins, and the transcendent power of fiber continues to fuel my making. In my practice, I use fiber-focused materials to bring the past closer to our present experience, often accompanied by found imagery of anonymous Hungarians from the last century. I combine methodical stitchwork with objects found on the wayside to answer my own questions of periphery and belonging.
Exposure to generations of ethnic Hungarian makers in Transylvania instilled an appreciation of what the patience and repetition of practice creates, leading me to a more mindful process.
I believe an understanding of making is one step toward a more sustainable world, leading to appreciation of the objects surrounding us. My craft is rooted in iteration and meditative practice, deepening the meaning of work wrought by human hands. Through knit and stitch, I explore connections concerning tradition and generational knowledge, connecting to my heritage through time-worn process. In handmaking, I honor the labor and evocative mist that clings to our lives.
I am based in Savannah, Georgia, a place where the past is close, and the fences are low.
